Pb 210 dating

The 210 Pb sediment dating is the most widely used method to determine recent (~100–150 years) chronologies and sediment accumulation rates in aquatic environments and has been used effectively for reconstruction of diverse environmental processes associated with global change. Owing to the relative accessibility of the 210 Pb methodology, many environmental chronologies have been produced ... Since dating by 210Pb is based on sediment records of 210Pb fallout, a proper assessment of the record requires a good knowledge of the atmospheric flux. Fallout 210 Pb derives from the decay of gaseous 222 Rn introduced into the at- Dating of Sediments using Lead-210. The naturally lead isotope 210Pb may be used to date aquatic sediments and peat bogs. The method is suitable for dating approximately 100 years back. Service. DHI offers dating of sediment cores by means of the 210Pb method and may assist with sampling in both marine and freshwater systems. The sediment ... Pb-210 is a naturally occurring radioactive element that is part of the uranium -238 radioactive decay series. The radioactive element uranium has an almost infinite half-life (4.5 * 10 9 yr) and for these purposes can be considered to be present at an unchanging concentration (over time) in the earth's crust. Although the concentration of ... Thus Goldberg (1963) developed the first principles of the 210 Pb dating method, which was soon followed by a paper by Crozaz et al. (1964), who examined accumulation history of Antarctic snow using 210 Pb. Shortly thereafter, Koide et al. (1972, 1973) adapted this technique to unravel sediment deposition and accumulation records in deep-sea ... 210Pb dating depends on theaccurate determination oflevel unsupported 210 Pb in a series of sediment samples. A sediment core records a detailed history of the environment in its Lead-210 dating, method of age determination that makes use of the ratio of the radioactive lead isotope lead-210 to the stable isotope lead-206.The method has been applied to the ores of uranium. In the series of unstable products from the radioactive decay of uranium-238, lead-210 results from the decay of radon-222 and is a precursor of the stable isotope lead-206. 210Pb Dating of Sediments 234U 238U 248ka 4.7Ga 63.3 53.2 210 Pb dating is a U/Th series disequilibrium method. It uses the fact that the noble gas 222 Rn escapes from sediments to the atmosphere and here decays to 210 Pb. The particle-reactive 210 Pb attaches to aerosols, is deposited, and can be used to date sediments in the anthropogenic time scale. ... Pb-210 is a naturally occurring radionuclide of the 238 U radioactive decay chain and has a half-life (t 1/2) of 22.23 years (Fig. 1).In most environmental systems that have remained “closed” for more than about 120 years (five times the half-life of 210 Pb), 210 Pb is derived from its parent radionuclide, 226 Ra (t 1/2 = 1,600 years), that is present in the material will reach a state of ... Sediment dating with 210Pb. 210 Pb is analysed by extracting the grand-daughter 210 Po and counting it in an alpha spectrometer. However a portion of the 210 Pb that is supported by 226 Ra within the sediment is also extracted and this background must be deducted from the total 210 Pb concentration values.

2019.12.06 18:00 Rsubs33 [Game Preview] Week 14 - Philadelphia Eagles(5-7) vs. New York Giants (2-10)

Philadelphia Eagles (5-7) vs New York Giants(2-10)
It is hard to stay positive about this team after laying an egg last week to one of the worst teams in the league in the Miami Dolphins. Ryan Fitzpatrick continues to own Jim Schwartz no matter what team he is on and how bad they might that year Schwartz refused to make adjustments with some reason leaving guys in run support against the league’s worst rushing offense and thought it was better to stay in cover-1 as opposed to give his corners help over the top. With that putrid performance the Eagles dropped to 5-7, yet somehow miraculous still control their own destiny to make the playoffs if they win their remaining 4 games, all against division rivals (NYG(2-10), @WAS(3-9), DAL(6-7), @NYG(2-10). A task that looks completely doable, though no guarantee especially after last weeks disaster. The first of those games will occur Monday night when the Giants make the trip down I-95 for a sorry excuse of Prime Time football with two teams both in the red. The Eagles will probably see an old face one last time as Eli Manning will be getting the start for the first time week 2 for the injured Daniel Jones. The Eagles have taken it to the Giants in the last 5 years going 9-1 in that span and will look to continue that dominance if they want to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Giants are in the middle of a rebuild and should be a team the Eagles can get it going against as they have deficiencies on both sides of the football. If the Eagles can get the offense going and limit Barkley they should be able to come away with a win and take their first ever lead in the eeries history with the Giants. Go Birds!

Eagles 25 - Giants 23
The Eagles injury riddled defense was able to do just enough for Carson Wentz and the injury riddled offense to find a groove and get the running game going. The Giants jumped out to a 12 points lead early thanks to a Saquan Barkley TD pass and a pair of field goals from Rosas, but the Eagles answered with a field goal of their own to make it 12-3. The Giants responded with a 51 yard Saquan Barkley TD run to give the Giants a 16 point lead. The Eagles traded blows answering with a Zach Ertz TD pass from Carson Wentz and an interception to close out the half. The Eagles got a their running game going in the second half and took the lead in the 4th quarter on a Josh Adams TD run to take a 3 point lead. The Giants were able to move the ball and even it at 22 with just under 6 minutes to play. The Eagles were able to move the ball down the field chewing up clock for Jake Elliott to kick a game winning field goal with 22 second left in the game. With limited time and deep in their own territory the Giants weren't able to get anything going to give the Eagles the win and keep their playoff hopes alive.

Stats to Know
The Blind Side
Let us compare LTs Nate Solder to Jason Peters/Andre Dillard this season, shall we? Of Offensive Linemen, Solder is currently tied for 3rd-most Sacks Allowed (9), tied for 6th in Hits Allowed (7), and has allowed the 4thd-most Hurries (29). That amounts to the greatest number of total Pressures allowed, thus far (45). In all of 2019, Solder only allowed 33 Pressures. Jason Peters has allowed 1 sack, 3 hits, and 11 hurries, while Dillard has allowed 4 sacks, 4, hits, and 13 hurries = combined 5 sacks, 7 hits, 24 hurries
Matchups to Watch
Giants Pass Defense vs Eagles Passing Offense
Another week, another stoppable force meeting a movable object, but this time on Monday Night Football. The Eagles Offense was able to perform well, even with mistakes, against a bad Dolphins offense last week. While they could have scored more points, when your defense let’s up 37 against a trash offense, there are bigger causes for concern. Like Miami, the Giants defense is straight booty cheeks. The only difference is the Giants don’t have the tanking excuse to hang their hat on. This is a defense that is 28th in opposing passer rating, 27th in pass plays of 20+ yards, 31st in pass plays of 40+ yards, and 30th in pass defense by DVOA – barely better than Miami. One area where the Giants can hang their hat on is their 11th ranked rush defense by DVOA… really making a difference, eh? The Eagles passing offense has another cupcake matchup this week they must take advantage of despite the calls to run more. It doesn’t mean to pass every play, it means they must find a way to get a bad receiver group open regularly. Alshon Jeffery is fresh off his best game of the year. While he does look like he is slowing down pretty quickly, he is still the Eagles best Wide Receiver. Nelson Agholor finally didn’t hurt the team and JJAW got his first career touchdown reception. Carson Wentz had a good but not flawless game against Miami that he hopefully builds off of. Wentz was 3rd in aggressiveness percentage indicating the receivers still aren’t getting enough separation and the scheme not helping them get open more regularly. This is concerning given the dearth of talent on the Miami roster. The Giants also have a dearth of talent in their secondary, led by rookie DeAndre Baker, who has been one of the worst DBs in the NFL this season. The Giants found someone to give Jalen Mills a run for his money. Janoris Jenkins is still the Giants best option at CB and the only one capable of playing man coverage despite being in the downside of his career, but even he isn’t playing well anymore. Their safety spots are a black hole. They still have Alec Ogletree and he is still terrible in coverage. This is a juicy matchup for a bad Eagles offense they need to take advantage of. Given what they scored last week, and the meat left on the bone, that shouldn’t and can’t be an issue for the Eagles on Monday.
Giants Passing Offense vs Eagles “Passing Defense”
As I’ve said the last few weeks, the Eagles recent surge on defense was more of a mirage than an actual turn around in performance. Ryan Fitzpatrick went God mode turning Devante Parker into Jerry Rice for 60 minutes as the Eagles defense was dry-humped up and down the field in spectacular fashion. This secondary cannot cover or make plays on the ball. They struggle to tackle. They can’t communicate. They are a mess. Week 13 does serve as an outlier to a degree; meaning, Fitzpatrick was nearly flawless, Parker made every single big catch he could, etc. Everything broke the Dolphins way in week 13, but they attacked the Eagles in the way every opposing offense should to find success… through the air! Fortunately, the Giants also have garbage tier QB play on the menu Sunday with Derps McGee – Eli Manning – retuning to the starting lineup in place of a banged up Danny Turnovers. Even though the Eagles defense does have a habit allowing mediocre players to turn into Hall of Famers, this is still a favorable matchup for them. Eli is in the waning days of his interesting career having been close to washed for some time. He’s not an aggressive passer and his arm strength is fading by the minute. While that plays into the Eagles favor since he’ll struggle to his big plays through the air if he attempts them at all, he’s still capable of hitting some quick timing plays underneath. The Giants may have Engram, Tate, and Shepard for this contest to go with stud rookie Darius Slayton and second year monster Saquon Barkley. Eli hasn’t played in some time so he should be rusty and out of sync with a receiver group that hasn’t played a full game together yet this year. The Eagles must be careful in their secondary, ensuring they play smart and tackle well. All of these players are able to win deep and after the catch. Given Eli’s current abilities, the former is likely out of the question. We’ve seen Eli quick strike this defense to death and could again. The defense cannot allow that to happen, especially against a poorly coached and scheme opposing offense.
Giants Offensive Line vs. Eagles Defensive Front
The Giants offensive line is still a below average unit on the whole but has made some steady improvements the last two years under Dave Gettleman. It’s probably the one area this guy can hang his hat on. Second year pro Will Hernandez is a bully at Left Guard and a good player that will continue to improve as he grows in this league. New right guard Kevin Zeitler has been dinged up on the season and is still the quality pass blocker he has been throughout his career. Journeyman center Joe Halapio is decent in the middle. This trio gives them a quality interior – it’s the tackles that let them down. Nate Solder has struggled mightily this season at Left Tackle after scoring big in Free Agency. Mike Remmers is still a below average offensive lineman playing right tackle. The Eagles interior rushers should find success on Sunday even though the Giants interior OL isn’t as poor as it once was, it’s the Defensive Ends that should feast in their matchups. And they need to since we all know the Eagles secondary just can’t cover anyone worth a damn. Derek Barnett, Brandon Graham, Josh Sweat, and Vinny Curry all have plus matchups against inferior tackles. We’ve seen Eli play scared under pressure and can easily be forced into errant throws. Additionally, the defensive front needs to play smart and gap sounds in order to control Saquon Barkely on the ground. Barkley is a tremendous talent that is clearly slowed by an ankle injury he suffered earlier this season. Philadelphia cannot be reckless in their defense as Barkley is still capable of making them pay. This will help the Giants offense be in less favorable down and distance situations that can force them into making mistakes. It always starts up front with the Eagles and will remain that way as long as the secondary is a liability.

John McDonnell: How dare Boris Johnson offer more tax cuts to the rich and corporations when 726 homeless people died on our streets last year, 4.5 million children are living in poverty and wages are lower than 2008. This was a speech to a small right wing cult called the Conservative Party. (2077 points, 521 comments)
    2. A Leaked Tory Memo Orders MPs To Call The EU "Crazy" If It Rejects Boris Johnson's Brexit Proposals (624 points, 133 comments)
    3. Lewis Goodall: Boris Johnson at DUP reception mentions Jeremy Corbyn, starts a sentence saying “we’ll invite him to enter...” Shout from the crowd: “Traitors’ gate!” Another: “a noose!” Grim. (357 points, 210 comments)
    4. Jeremy Corbyn: Football is part of our lives, our community and it's the place where people go to socialise and enjoy each other's company. Let's take the beautiful game away from the billionaires and hand it to the fans instead. (318 points, 200 comments)
    5. Jeremy Corbyn: This is the right decision. Now the BBC must apologise and overhaul its complaints procedure. When people of colour call out racism they should be listened to and supported. Action should be taken against racists, not those that challenge them. (297 points, 183 comments)
    6. John McDonnell: Pathetic attempt at catch up by Tories will fool nobody. Labour will introduce £10 as a minimum as soon as we take office and, rising with living costs, it will mean everyone over 16 years old will be earning comfortably more than £10.50 an hour by 2024. (211 points, 113 comments)
    7. Jeremy Corbyn: For once the Daily Mail is right. We'll take on the bad owners and billionaires like Mike Ashley, we'll give supporters a say over how their club is run and we'll make sure that the Premier League's riches are invested in grassroots football in our communities. (202 points, 136 comments)
    8. The Court of Session in Scotland has been told that Government documents say the Prime Minister will seek an extension from the EU if no EU Withdrawal Agreement is reached by 19 October (152 points, 78 comments)

    1. BBC Radio 4 today claims allegations are about Boris Johnson’s 'private life'. This is wrong and offensive. She was a young journalist. He was editor. It was a work lunch. 2. Tory minister humiliated as she fails at her own department's citizenship test (659 points, 427 comments)
    3. @SolHughesWriter: Liz Truss having a glass of gin at Spectator meeting, paid for by the Cayman Islands government, who paid for the room and drinks for the whole audience. They are a Tax Haven lobbying against transparency rules. (595 points, 64 comments)
    4. @lewis_goodall: There’s going to be huge interest in the legal text and the speech today but we shouldn’t lose sight of the truly big change this week. Boris Johnson and the Brexiters have admitted their form of Brexit necessitates checks in Ireland after years of dismissing it as nonsense. (575 points, 67 comments)

2019.09.17 13:09 f00dl3 Global Warming / Climate Change

First and foremost, our weather is quiet. Nothing showing up really impacting Kansas City except hot and humid weather with little to no rain chances for a while. https://climate.cod.edu/data/forecast/NAMNST/2019091706/CGP/NAMNSTCGP_prec_precacc_060.png NAM 3KM shows heavy rain as close as Des Moines on THU AM. THU AM should be a good day for my 13 mile run!
GFS shows some decent rain this weekend around, but due to resolution I am cautiously optimistic. It is possible that bulls-eye may be over Kansas City, but I wouldn’t get my hopes up until this becomes more a trend in the models – touch base on this again Thursday. https://climate.cod.edu/data/forecast/GFS/2019091706/CGP/GFSCGP_prec_precacc_210.png
So the meat and potatoes of this post!
So what better way to test the Reddit platform than have a controversial somewhat weather somewhat political discussion!
Over the years I have strongly been doubtful of the claims that humans are causing global warming. Climate change, even in the 1970s, Global Cooling. Though, I was not around in the 1970s – so I have no personal experience with that subject matter.
https://skepticalscience.com/10000-years-warmer.htm There are tons of articles regarding global warming, but perhaps this is one of the more telling ones. Greenland Warming apparently is not the same as Global Warming according to this article. So sorry but if I don’t understand things, but does global warming not imply that the entire earth is warming? So wouldn’t Greenland’s temperature trends be a direct reflection of the entire planet’s?
Such the same would be said for temperatures say at Kansas City International Airport. In my database gathered off CF6 data made available by the National Weather Service, we have a average temperature of 55.5F, with a trend of 0.95F over the past 119 years. But I don’t really know if that’s a full indicator of HUMAN caused global warming or some of it being natural. https://drive.google.com/open?id=10j07V8rSfRQ2yfS2J7eA6vqiUdk5bihv (graph) or https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6ScTEIoK3tPbWUwbm5pQUNMTm5kalhLZHBfeXJ4ajN4SmtF (raw SQL dump)
There was also an interesting article published earlier this year, stating that something called Cosmic Rays may be contributing as much as 95% of the warming we have experienced over the past century or so. https://www.downtoearth.org.in/news/climate-change/scientists-find-evidence-cosmic-rays-influence-earth-s-climate-65436 . There are actually a lot of sources that say cosmic rays influence our climate though they state all that data is “speculative”
But let’s be honest, we only have accurate data, globally, dating back maybe 100 years at best. Satellites have only been around since the 1960s or so – and satellite resolution has increased so much that one could argue any satellite based temperature data prior to around 2001 should really be thrown out due to resolution issues and ability to see localized extremes both hot and cold. And every time satellite resolution increases it sees things that we can use to inflate data based on extremes the increased resolution sees versus old data. Scientific accuracy bias.
There is going to always be the argument “storms have gotten stronger, more deadly, etc.” – Hurricane Maria, Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Dorian, Hurricane Katrina. I don’t recall but I’m sure people blamed Hurricane Andrew on global warming too. The tornado outbreak of 2011 in the deep south many people have blamed on global warming, etc. But we as a society be it because of generation gaps or purposeful self-bias in general forget the major tornado outbreaks of past such as the Palm Sunday super outbreak, 1925 Tri-state tornado which killed 625, the super deadly 1900 Galveston hurricane, and numerous hurricanes in the past.
Less we also forget Hurricane Allen 1980. People were so lucky that that storm stayed over water most of it’s track until it reached the US – https://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/atlantic/1980/Major-Hurricane-Allen - The storm was literally a Category 4/5 storm for 8 straight days over the open Atlantic/Caribbean/Gulf of Mexico waters. If that storm would have tracked just 100 miles south it would have devastated Cuba.
There have been many storms in the tropics that have had tracks so close to land. And we also have to remember, tourism and population in the Caribbean has increased in some places like the Bahamas by 4x since 1960. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_the_Bahamas. It was only a matter of time before we had a mass casualty hurricane event take place. For the hurricane aspect, personally I argue it has nothing to do with global warming / climate change, but more population growth.

A little late, but here's my race report for IM Santa Rosa!
tl;dr it was my first triathlon and I trained for 9 months at 6.1 hrs/week. Finished 12:18:42, bike leg was my worst. Training schedule is included along with thoughts about the race.
Full post with pictures and embedded charts is available here, but copy/pasted below as well.
-----------
On May 11, 2019, I finished Ironman Santa Rosa. A 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, and 26.2-mile run; 9 months of training for a race that would be over in about 12 hours.
During this time, a few friends asked me how I was preparing, so I've written this post in hopes that it helps them—or another online passerby—with their Ironman training. It ended up being longer than I expected, but hopefully it's thorough. It's my attempt at summarizing 9 months of thought and research in a post.
For navigation, it is organized as follows:

Motivation

I signed up to race in Ironman Santa Rosa on July 20, 2018. I had never done a triathlon before, or a marathon, or a century ride, or anything more than a casual swim in the pool; neither a complete triathlon nor any of the component parts that make up a full Ironman-distance event. My longest race was a half marathon in San Francisco.
So why did I decide to do this? Honestly, I don't have a great answer. I thought at some point in my life I might like to, so might as well just do it now and force myself to get fit. You can also delay your participation in Ironman events by a year after registering, so in reality I actually had two years to prepare if needed. But that's cheating and no fun :)
Spoiler alert: it all worked out. Although in hindsight, signing up on a whim was probably not the best decision.
First, it would have been helpful to work my way up; to, at the very least, participate in a sprint or olympic triathlon first and get the feel of what it's like to do all three sports in succession.
Second, it's expensive. The Ironman events themselves are pricey, and then you have to factor in all the equipment on top (bike, bike fit, bike gear, bike shoes, running shoes, wetsuit, swim gear, nutrition, ...). To buy all this in a short time span—especially without any validation that I actually liked the sport—was expensive, but mostly just a cost of stupidity.
Finally, I somewhat underestimated the time commitment. I researched the number of hours training would take, but I didn't really understand what that felt like day-to-day. A simple one-hour swim, for example, is actually 2.5 hours in NYC when you have to walk to the gym and back, wait for a lane at the pool, rotate out of said lane after 30 minutes because there is a waiting list, and then finish off the other 30 minutes of your workout after again waiting for a new lane. A 14-hour training week is 14 hours of workout time, but in reality it's probably closer to 20 or 25 hours of calendar time. Understanding this before would have been helpful, but I slowly learned to plan for this over time. Also, my weekly training hours were never this high.

Goal

After signing up for the event and getting a sense of my base fitness, I started to have an idea of what my goal for the race would be. First and foremost, it would be to finish. But I also wanted to place above average, which according to Google is 12 hours and 30 minutes.
I don't know why I chose this arbitrary time; being entirely truthful, I think it's because I didn't like the idea of finishing below average. I recognize that races (at the non-professional level) are—and should be—entirely against yourself, but I'm just being honest with my motivations here. I should have chosen this time with more intention.

Training

Base Fitness

As mentioned, the longest race I had ever done before the Ironman was 13.1 miles, a half marathon in San Fransisco. I had also never done any combination of the events in the same session (e.g. a bike ride and then a run). Prior to beginning training in September, 2018, the longest distance of each event I had ever completed was:
Event Race Experience Longest Distance (Race or Otherwise)
Swim None 50m (two pool lengths) without pause
Bike None 36.86 miles (3:13:38)
Run Half-Marathon 13.1 miles (1:31:01)
As you can tell, swimming was not my strong suit. I had okay form, but had never really swam laps, which is quite different from casually swimming in the pool or ocean.

Training Notions

I had some baseline notions about my own fitness level, strengths, weaknesses, etc. that I think were important to build before making my own training plan:
  1. Running was my strength. "Get me out of the water and off the bike, and I'll be fine," I thought. Training here would matter the least (sadly, because running also requires the least amount of wasted time and money).
  2. Swimming would start off the worst, but improve quickly. I had read that, at first, it's very common to be out of breath quickly while swimming. Your running endurance won't transfer immediately, but after learning proper breathing technique and swimming for a few weeks, two laps will quickly become 20.
  3. I'd spend some time getting the technique right for swimming before worrying about distance or time.
  4. The bike is the most important part of the race. It's about half the entire race in terms of time, so you can shave off the most time quickly by improving this event. That is, if I could improve 10% in any event, that would equate to 6-9 min on the swim, 33-42 min on the bike, or 18-24 minutes on the run. Time to buy a bike!
  5. Either swimming or biking would be the hardest of the three events for me, but biking mattered more.
Keeping these few things in the back of my mind helped me get started, plan for my race, and most importantly, structure my training throughout the 9 months. For anyone starting their own training, I'd highly recommend getting a good sense of your baselines and goals before even signing up for the race, but after works too I guess.

Training Schedule

First off, there really isn't a one-size-fits-all plan; it depends on your base fitness, your training response, and—most importantly—your life (kids? crazy work hours? live in NYC where every swim takes 100x longer than it should?).
I did not have a coach at any point during training, so most of the workouts and plans were from free resources I found online. On TrainingPeaks, you can find an abundance of training plans, especially paid ones, but I ended up using three free plans from USA Triathlon and rolling them into one another in succession:
  1. "USA Triathlon Olympic-distance: Intermediate 12 Week Plan"
  2. "USA Triathlon 70.3 Base Period: 12 Week Plan"
  3. "USA Triathlon 140.6 Base Period : 12 Week Plan"
Using these on TrainingPeaks was great; each workout included notes, drills, and times, and they were automatically added straight into the TrainingPeaks calendar.
I also used a few workouts from Beginner Triathlete's "Free Beginner Full Ironman Training Plan," which has PDF workout sheets for each week of a 20-week Ironman training schedule. I used these as an occasional cross reference for when I felt like the USA Triathlon schedule wasn't ramping up in difficulty enough. I'd say the Beginner Triathlete plan is slightly larger in training volume compared to the USAT plans.
For swimming, I watched a bunch of YouTube videos to learn proper technique, especially early on in training. My gym's pool is 17 yards (yes, you read that correctly) and has a 30-minute cap if there's more than six people, so lots of turns and waiting around! As for swim aids, I purchased a freestyle snorkel and my pool has pull buoys, fins, and paddles, all of which I used at some point or another.
For cycling, I rode most of my training rides in the first half of training on a spin machine at the gym and then indoors on a Wahoo Kickr with Zwift once I purchased a bike. It was pretty cold out in NYC for most of the training season, so only once it became nice outside did I have a chance to practice outdoors. Even so, riding in NYC is horrible, so I usually opted for indoor training wherever possible, which ultimately hurt because I wasn't comfortable riding safely in aero position and only did so for approximately 1% of Ironman Santa Rosa.
For running, it was pretty straightforward. Unless it was super cold outside and I was forced to be on the treadmill, I ran outdoors on the mostly flat Manhattan East/West side paths.
All that said, below is an export of my TrainingPeaks workouts from when I started training on September 3, 2018 to race day on May 11, 2019. You'll notice a few things:
  1. Monday was my easy/rest day, in addition to the other days that I cheated on my training. I used Mondays as a chance to do light strength training and stretching.
  2. I went very light on training from December 9th to January 16th because of a quad injury and knee pain. I mostly swam during this (incredibly frustrating) time, because running and cycling both hurt. I started physical therapy after this injury and began incorporating quad and glute strengthening exercises, which I continued to do every Monday.
  3. After March 8th, I started using the Beginner Triathlete plans because I thought they were better for both the max training load weeks and the taper weeks.
  4. The Apple Watch, when synced with TrainingPeaks, does not count rest time or kicking drills during swim workouts, only active swim stroke minutes. I've generally found active swim minutes to be about 2/3 of the total time of my swim workouts, so I've adjusted the time already to account for this.
Training Plan

Race Readiness

Here are a few summaries that I compiled from my training schedule log and data (TrainingPeaks + Strava).
First, some stats about my fitness level after training:
Second, my max training session distances before the race were:
Peak Session Date Distance Time
Swim - Ocean 3/24/19 2.0 miles 1:08:36
Bike - Indoor Trainer (using actual IM Santa Rosa course with Best Bike Split on Zwift ERG Mode) 4/28/19 91.5 miles 4:46:22
Run - Outdoor (watch died) 3/16/19 ~20 miles ~3:00:00
Finally, I averaged 6.1 hours/week (skewed slightly due to injury) for 36 weeks, with a training distribution and total number of weekly training hours as follows:
Session Breakdown
Weekly Hours
Looking at this summary, I really didn't do that many hours of training in hindsight. It felt like more when I was doing it though. I think this is, in part, because I generally did the prescribed workout in a faster time than TrainingPeaks suggested it would take, but this is definitely on the ultra low end of training hours that I've seen online.

Race Day

For what it's worth, 9 months sounded like a lot of time, and for most of it, it also felt like a lot of time. But somewhere around 1.5 months out from race day, time seemingly accelerated and with it my feelings of doubt. I was pretty confident I would finish, but was concerned about what it would take. Was I more prepared than I felt? Or would I be crossing the finish line on all fours, crawling the last few miles?
My best advice is just to trust your training, make a good race plan, and rely on sheer adrenaline, happiness, and cheers to get you through the race.

Race Plan

By the time race day rolled around, my ideal time range was anywhere from 11 hours to 12.5 hours, with the only requirement being that I absolutely had to finish. These two concepts don't exactly agree when making a race plan, however.
By trying to hit 11:00:00 pace, I risk over-exerting myself and not being able to finish, which, again, was my only requirement. By going at 12:30:00 pace, I can probably finish, but risk not leaving it all on the course. Herein lies yet another downside of not having previous triathlon experience: I didn't really know what to shoot for.
Ultimately, I think I made the right compromise and would recommend it again to anyone in this position: aim to finish the race at a comfortable pace, and if you're feeling strong in the last quarter of each event, go a bit faster.
With that in mind, I settled on the following race pace plan. One helpful tool was Best Bike Split, which takes your FTP and the course profile and generates power targets for you to hit while on the bike. It estimated I'd finish the bike around 5:47:00. My swim and run estimates were just based on what I thought I could achieve from training. The "Notes" are copied and pasted directly from an iPhone note I made on my flight to Santa Rosa:
Event Target Time (hrs) Notes
Swim (2.4 miles) 1:20 - 1:30 First lap steady. Swim out wide. Strengthen midway through second lap if feeling rhythm.
Bike (112 miles) 5:45 - 7:00 Steady first 20 min. Nothing special. Settle in to rhythm. Easy for first 60 miles. If feeling good after special needs, put some additional power in. Finish easy.
Run (26.2 miles) 3:45 - 4:30 Start SLOW. Too slow. 9:30 pace even. Feel it out after first 6 miles. Gatorade sips. Banana bite midway if needed. Use fruit. If feeling okay by mile 16, go for negative split. Fight the mental fatigue/pain... last 10 will all be mental.

Race-Day Nutrition

I thought about including this in the section above, but it really does warrant its own section. Not just because there is a lot to say, but because of the importance of perfecting your race-day nutrition.
I don't think I nailed my nutrition perfectly, but was fairly close. It got me through the race without bonking. With a bit more practice in advance, I think it could have been even better. So don't take for granted the advice you read about using your race day nutrition on long bike training rides. It's critical and could be the difference between a time you're proud of and a DNF.
Again, without previous experience I didn't know my actual calorie burn for the events in a race setting, so I had to estimate and craft a plan around that. To estimate your calorie burn and intake needs, I'd recommend this site. Mine came out to consuming about 210 cal/hour on the bike. I made this handy Google Sheet to auto-populate calories, carbs, sodium, caffeine, etc. as I added a new item to my nutrition plan.
I first thought I would do Gatorade and Gu nutrition alone. I found quickly that it didn't work for me. I switched to a light electrolyte drink (Skratch) and bars (Bonk Breaker PB&J), which was much better. This is all personal preference though, so it's best to experiment and find what works best for you: bars, gels, chews, liquids, etc. In the coming months, I might try an all-liquid plan like INFINIT.

Thoughts During the Race

Starting Line

"Oh dear god, what have I done." I said goodbye to my family, just hoping that I'd come out of the water alive. In all seriousness, I was just thinking about how I was going to take the day really easy to make sure I'd finish. I lined up at the very back of the 1:20:00 - 1:30:00 swim pack and tried to settle the nerves.

Swim

"Wow, this is feeling really great. Just settle into a nice pace." Although, take everything you learned about a pool swim stroke and throw it out the window. Instead, add back arching to sight, a much faster stroke rate, and more head rotation so you breath in air and not water.
But, I got out after the first lap and looked at my watch: 35 minutes. "Wow! Killing it," I thought. Went back in for the second lap and continued at a nice, easy pace, thinking about how wonderful the lake temperature was and how I should've seeded myself a little faster at the starting line.

T1

"Helmet, glasses, socks, shoes... okay go." Then I left the tent and stuck my arms out for the sunscreen volunteers. Huge. Mistake. So much sunscreen that I had to stop, find a towel, and wipe it all off to avoid losing my grip on the handlebars and biking away looking like the Michelin Man. + 2 minutes for sunscreen fiasco.

Bike

"Welp." I mounted the bike and almost immediately knew I wasn't going to feel safe riding in aero position (lack of outdoor aero practice). The first 3 miles were a fast descent, which I also wasn't comfortable with. It wasn't off to a great start, getting passed by several riders pretty quickly.
By mile 40, I had averaged around 18.5 MPH and was close to my Best Bike Split power targets, but I could feel the saddle pain starting. Here is where I started to wonder if this bike split would be disastrous. I just didn't have enough outdoor practice time in the saddle.
I was toast at mile 60. My average speed dipped below 17 MPH, I started having to stop at aid stations just to get off the bike seat. I could feel the mental fatigue setting in and my nutrition was probably also slightly off (I think I needed more salt, which I didn't have).
I grabbed a banana and more electrolyte drink from my special needs bag around mile 75, but most importantly, I stood up off the bike seat.
By mile 90, I really couldn't bear sitting on the bike and pedaling any longer. I started kind of coasting. My average speed dropped to 16.3 MPH, which I knew couldn't go much lower or I'd go over 7:00:00 on the bike, my low bike objective. At mile 100 it was all mental, and instead of counting up, I now began counting down: only 12 miles left.
Mile 110: "You're so close to getting off this piece of @*$%. Just finish."

T2

"Thank god this bike is over, and why is running in bike cleats so impossible?"

Run

"Just a marathon left." I basically winged my pace and nutrition as I went. My thought was to take the first couple miles very easy, absolutely nothing below 8:00 pace. Then at mile 3, my goal was to shoot for 8:40 pace until the half marathon mark, at which point I could slow to 9:00 if needed. At mile 13, however, I was feeling pretty good, so decided to continue this 8:40 pace until the end of the second lap (mile ~18). Then at mile 20, I realized I could go under 12:20:00 for the whole race if I continued at around 9:00 pace, so I battled it out for the last 6.2 miles right below that pace.
As for nutrition, I basically just took whatever I felt like drinking and eating at aid stations. Ended up being ice water at ~2/3 of them, Gatorade at ~1/3 of them, ~5 orange slices, ~3 banana halves, and two BASE salt thumb licks.

Results

My 2019 Ironman Santa Rosa time was 12:18:42. I placed 7 of 36 in the M20-24 category and 504 of 2,094 in the field. The splits for my race were:
Swim (2.4 miles) Bike (112 miles) Run (26.2 miles) Finish
1:15:18 6:58:07 3:48:13 12:18:42
Overall, I'm really happy with the way it went. I left feeling tired and sore but definitely wanting to do another full-distance triathlon.
The swim and run felt awesome and were faster than I expected. My bike split could have been much better, but wasn't so bad that I was frustrated with it; I knew it'd be my weakest area. I came in just ahead of my low bike target time, which was likely due to lack of training. I only rode for a total of maybe two minutes in aero position during the race because I didn't feel safe doing so with my lack of practice. I was passed by tons of riders on the flats and descents, but made up some time on the climbs. I think, had I been more comfortable on the bike and with some additional training, I could have been much closer to my Best Bike Split estimate especially since I had practiced these exact power numbers for almost 5 hours using ERG mode on Zwift.
Looking back, my training hours were definitely on the low side of what most online resources will recommend. There were certainly a few weeks when I let workouts slide or missed a day (or two). I probably could have trained longer and had better results, especially on the bike. I probably should have. And I will, next time! But for now, I'm pretty content.

What's Next?

Thankfully, I really enjoyed this experience. It wasn't just the race itself but the training too. I think I'm in the best physical shape of my life (except for maybe high school soccer days, when you could play for 90 minutes and not even need to stretch afterwards), and it is largely a result of haphazardly clicking "Complete" on my race registration. It was also incredibly inspiring to see other athletes doing their 20-somethingth Ironman race, 65+ year olds passing me on the bike as if I was riding a beach cruiser and pedaling backwards, sub-9-hour finishers, and those that fought hard to make it just before the midnight cut-off.
I will absolutely do another Ironman. My goal is sometime in the first half of 2020 with a finish time around 11 hours. Between then and now, I also want to try some shorter distance races—maybe a sprint (750 m, 20 km, 5 km) or an olympic (1.5 km, 40 km, 10 km)—while I train hard to get better on the long bike distances. I'd also like to run a marathon straight up.
Last but not least, a special thank you to everyone who supported me along the way. Words cannot express how much your encouragement helped. Thank you.

Even if sometimes they gave me anxiety, reports like this were helpful, so I figured I'd make one as a way of giving back to the community that helped me achieve my Step goal.
If you're curious as to how I felt on test day, I made an initial impressions post here. To sum things up, I thought my test felt like a good mix of different systems, not too heavy in any particular area. I only ran into a couple questions that weren't similar to anything I studied, but I (think) was still able to reason through them. I walked out feeling decent, much different from the terrible feeling I had expected.

Resources used:
In retrospect, the most important resource for me imo was zanki. I'm very much a person who likes to piece things together once I have a firm grasp of the building blocks. If I haven't memorized various substrates or enzymes, it's tougher for me to complete a picture of a biochem pathway, for example. I started zanki 10 months prior to my test date, but I don't think I had as quick of a pace as I should have, as I ended up cramming a lot of it towards the end of pre-dedicated and for the first two weeks of dedicated.
In general, anki was something I had a lot of confidence in, and as a result, it was my primary means of memorizing anything. I tried starting a "pass" of FA, but after a few chapters, I realized I still only really knew what I had learned via zanki, so I stopped reading FA other than occasionally as a reference.

Edit: Oh, mini plug but I'm selling a practically unused 6 months of Kaplan Qbank and 3 weeks of Rx if anyone's interested

2019.03.18 04:51 RuffSwami [PROGRAM/COACHING REVIEW] 32 Weeks of Sebastian Oreb (Australianstrengthcoach)'s Strength System Online

I've been running Sebastian Oreb's Strength System Online program for 32 weeks now, and since it's a paid service, I thought it would be good to share my experience as well as hopefully give some sort of insight into the program in case anyone is considering joining the system. Overall it was a really positive experience for me that I would recommend to others.

Background:

Me:
M/6'4/~104kg
I have been interested in strength sports for a while, but have only been able to dedicate myself entirely to strength training for short stints in between other sports. I've been lifting for a bit over 5 years with various different degrees of commitment. My main goals coming into this program were to gain strength whilst also improving my physique - I know that lots of people here might say that I'm light for my height, but at least for now I find it hard to get too much heavier whilst staying lean/having abs.

Oreb:
Sebastian Oreb (often known as 'Australianstrengthcoach') is a strength coach based in Sydney with a pretty impressive resume. Oreb himself is a powerlifter competing in the 110kg class with a 375kg squat, 240kg bench press, and 330kg deadlift. He most famously coaches Thor Bjornsson, the world's strongest man, but has also coached multiple powerlifters to 1000kg totals as well as many fighters, rugby players and other sportspeople. I was drawn to his program after seeing the success that Thor has reached since coming under his tutelage - on top of this, as I am interested in more general strength training the fact that he has coached a wide assortment of professional athletes appealed to me.

Results (all in kg):

Date Previous PBs August 2018 December 2018 March 2019
Squat 210 170 227.5 235
Bench Press 127.5 110 130 135
Deadlift 240 190 235 250
Overhead Press 87.5 75 85 92.5
Bodyweight 110 96 108 105

Coming into the program I hadn't been able to train much for around 3 months, and had been injured before then. As a result of this I'm showing four sets of lifts: my all time PBs prior to the program, my estimated maxes when starting the program, and my results at the end of each 16 week block. I was really pleased to regain basically all of my strength back in the first block, and then exceed that in the second block.

NB: I actually wasn't always able to train during the period I followed this program, so I had to cram some weeks in without many rest days after a period of being away from a gym. I'm sure my results would be better had I been able to train more consistently.

The Service

Value:
Strength System Online isn't cheap, and to be honest I find it hard to make a judgement on whether it's worth it (having never used similar services). Ultimately, if you can spare the money then I would recommend it. Of course, most people get great results without paying a cent for programming/coaching, so there's no point breaking the bank for this. Having said that, I was really happy with my results, and feel like I can take a lot from the programming and technique advice into the future.

Website/Spreadsheet:
You'll be given access to the web site, which allows you to download the program through an excel/numbers spreadsheet. The spreadsheet isn't really customisable - but will make slight changes to the volume/intensity based on your strength level. The site also contains exercise guides, which are pretty helpful, as well as some basic nutrition and warmup advice.

Facebook Group:
I would really recommend having Facebook if you're going to use the system. If you post a video to the group, Sebastian will critique your form. This is the really useful bit of the program (and what makes it worth paying for imo). The advice will obviously vary depending on how your form is etc., but will usually be around a paragraph suggesting what you're doing well, what you're not, and what to change for next time. Moreover, Seb will answer basically any question about the program so you don't have to be in the dark when it comes to making changes, adjusting for other circumstances etc. I will say though, that the more people that join the system the longer it might take Seb to get through to each question. You will always have a response before you next have to do the movement/session you are asking about, but the response time can vary based on his schedule. It's also useful to look through other lifters' videos and feedback to take away some extra advice. Seb has recently started doing live videos in the group where he will answer any question answered and usually speak about some aspect of programming or technique.

The Program

I would describe the Strength System Online Program as a general strength program that operates through the use of a lot of powerlifting movements. I'll try to go through the different aspects of the program and give a basic overview/how I think I responded to them.
Overall Structure/Periodisation:
The system works through 16 week programs. Each program consists of four 4 week phases (you are able to access a new phase each month). The first three phases use simple linear progression (adding weight each week) with rep ranges 4-8, while the last phase peaks you to hit a 1-2 singles which should be a new PB. Each phase will see changes in the rep ranges and exercise variations used. The end of each phase is a deload - you still add weight going into the last week, but cut the volume a lot. I thought this was a helpful way of getting in some recovery but still seeing progression and challenging myself each week.

Frequency/Split:
The program is a pretty simple four day split - Squat/Bench/Deadlift/OHP or Bench assistance. At first I was worried 1x a week training for squat and deadlift wouldn't be optimal for me, but I found this was enough to help me progress. Importantly, I really didn't feel as many niggles as I have when I've trained squat or deadlift more frequently and I've had no injuries over the 32 weeks.

Exercise Selection:
You work a lot with close variations on this program. As I said, each phase will see new variations of the main lift being used. Squatting variations consist of high bar, front, SSB and low bar work with some tempo/pause work thrown in for each. Benching has included varying the grip width or pause length, incline and Spoto press. There are a lot of deficit deadlifts with some paused and snatch grip work as well.
In terms of assistance exercises, squat days will usually have a secondary squatting movement, plus maybe a bit of machine work. Bench and overhead days always use a 1:1 pushing/pulling ratio and will usually superset the pushing/pulling movements. Pushing assistance will be a lot of dumbbells with some barbell variations, while pulling is usually some sort of row, lat pulldown, or chinup. Rear delt work is done after every upper body session. Deadlift assistance is generally one or two compound movements for the posterior chain. I think the variation in main/assistance movements as well as the emphasis on structural symmetry has helped me develop a decent physique.

Volume:
I'd say the volume on this program is moderate - high depending on the phase. If squat or deadlift days include secondary variations, then the volume can feel kinda tough. For example, doing 5x6 SSB squats before 5x3 high bar paused squats supersetted with leg curls is one of the more high volume sessions. Overall though, Oreb doesn't actually like the idea of 'training hard', and really prioritises recovery, so it isn't crazy. Importantly, the spreadsheet will adjust the volume of the program based on your bodyweight, gender and strength level, so the stronger you are the less volume you'll be doing.

Intensity:
For most of the program, the intensity stays fairly moderate. There isn't actually a linear progression upwards in intensity each phase, rather the first 12 weeks of a 16 week program will be fairly steady in terms of intensity (around 60-80% of 1RM depending on the variation), but by the last week of a phase the sets will always feel fairly tough. Again, Oreb isn't really about pushing yourself past any point of technical failure, so advises that if a weight is causing your form to break down you should lower it for the next session. In the peaking phase, the intensity gets quite high. I have a slight complaint here, which is just that I found the jump into peaking a bit drastic - often going straight into work with 90% of 1RM. I actually found the first week of peaking harder than the second for a lot of lifts as a result of this, and would have preferred to have a week or two more of peaking to ease into the heavier weights a bit more slowly.

Modifications:
I didn't really modify this program (I paid for it after all...) apart from adding in some isolation exercises (which Sebastian said was fine as long as I was still recovering). Simply ask Seb in the Facebook group about any injury/equipment limitations and he will suggest alternatives, which I found useful.

Conclusion/Takeaways

I was really happy with my results on this program - I stayed injury free, gained strength, and improved my physique. I definitely think my experience on the system is going to help me with future programming/training choices, and I'll probably start running a similar style of program tweaked to my personal preferences. The program itself isn't that complicated on the surface, it's really based on simple principles with a focus on consistency and technique. It's not super intense in terms of maximal work, AMRAPs, or super high frequency, but it works and the sessions are fun. If you have the money to spare, I'd say give it a shot. I'm happy to answer any questions!

2018.12.17 05:10 Musicman3003 Ranking Every Adventure Time Episode Part Two

Link to Part One: https://old.reddit.com/adventuretime/comments/a6mlwf/ranking_every_single_adventure_time_episode_part/
The Decent
For a show that’s had nearly 300 episodes, I find it impressive only 45 of them to be on the whole weak. It may seem like a lot, but for a show that’s been going on for 8 years, a 6 out of 7 batting average is pretty damn good. Note that some of the episodes to come are not great by any means and could easily be seen as mediocre by other people depending on their taste. Now, let's go out and explore some more episodes!
239.Ricardio the Heart Guy- It’s an enjoyable romp boosted by George Takei. Oh my. As the beginning of Finn’s romantic tension with PB (in the childish sense), it serves its purpose well. However, PB does suffer here and sort of looks like an idiot.
238.Business Time- It’s amazing to think just how much this episode influenced the rest of the show. It’s not great, but “Business Time” really did alter the status quo forever.
237.The Silent King- The Goblin Kingdom is one of the less interesting places in Ooo. At least we got the Jake Suit, which actually has been used well throughout the series.
236.Bonnie and Neddy- King of Ooo is a great addition for the first part of Season 7, and his presence is welcome here. However, parts of the comedy are either bland or feel forced, so I’m glad the crew more successfully returned to some of its roots than here.
235.The Prince Who Wanted Everything- Alright, I have a soft spot for this one. It’s stupid as heck and still doesn’t really take full use of its concept, but it’s always nice to see a fanfic sexy lump of a hunk blowing up his parents with his cries of arrogance.
234.Blood Under the Skin- An okay episode about embarrassment. Sir Slicer’s pretty lame, but a good game of Drop Ball makes my day.
233.The Witch’s Garden- Gotta love Jake denying the lesson and just eating donuts anyway. I don’t care for the whole baby body stuff.
232.Lady Rainicorn of the Crystal Dimension- TV is a character you have to use carefully, such as in “The Diary.” Having TV here with a plot involving a crystal sandwich is weak though. Lady’s a decent character, and she helps to make this episode somewhat successful.
231.What Have You Done?- This episode starts to flesh out Ice King’s character in a satisfying fashion. The plot’s pretty creative and is benefitted by some strong interactions between Finn, Jake, and Ice King. They really did do a great job converting him from outright villain to a crazy yet sympathetic hermit. The main thing holding it back is the somewhat weak third act.
230.Earth and Water- A decent episode. It’s honestly astounding how much ground this one covers without feeling totally rushed: We get FP’s backstory, her developing relationship with CB, some stuff involving Ice King as a roommate, the growing tension between PB and FP, Gunther going nuts, Flame King getting overthrown, and Finn struggling to deal with the loss of his girlfriend. Obviously, some of it underwhelms such as with Flame King, but as set up it’s somewhat admirable and mildly fun.
229.Mama Said- The relaxing tone is nice, which is something Kent Osborne can often do. Even with some hilarious moments (I actually like the ending song), it still sort of feels like a wannabe Season 2 episode.
228.The Pods- A bland concept lifted by some funny and bizarre moments. Finn and Jake can carry almost any type of episode. (cough “Box Prince cough)
227.Reign of Gunthers- I miss Gunther when he was adorably psychotic just for the sake of it. Wizard City is also a cool location with cool characters.
226.BMO Lost- A below average BMO escapade, but it’s got a killer ending.
225.Ring of Fire- Tree Trunks is a different character now than when she was first introduced, but I find her quite a bit more entertaining in her current iteration. They could have gone raunchier, but parts of the backstory are chuckle worthy and the story is even a little endearing.
224.Islands: Whipple the Happy Dragon- It's the weakest of the Islands miniseries, but I do like how the crew explores different parts of the sea and grow increasingly anxious as their situation worsens. Not entirely cohesive, but it’s still somewhat satisfying.
223.James- I don’t care for James too much, but his debut has some good tension. PB’s ambiguous nature comes into play here, and the Goo bros are genuinely both sad and scary. Parts of the episode are definitely manipulative, however, which serve to be detrimental. I do me want to see more of the Badlands, though.
222.From Bad to Worse- It’s decent with some creepy moments to it. The concept played better the first time, however.
221.Tree Trunks- Her and Maja’s explosive deaths would serve as a pretty sick percussive beat.
220.Who Would Win- Pretty great to know that this is one of the few times where Finn and Jake really fight one another. It goes to show just how strong their brotherly bond really is.
219.Crystals Have Power- It’s the first time AT has brought a character back from the dead, but it certainly won’t be the last. The slow pace puts a little damper on things.
218.Finn the Human- I’ve decided that it’s best to divide bigger specials into parts considering that their quality varies even if the same story-boarders are involved with the whole special. Therefore, this episode is an interesting yet underwhelming follow up to “The Lich.” There’s lots of interesting pieces of lore and some good sequences, but they can’t stop the episode from feeling a little boring in places. Thankfully, “Crossover” singlehandedly makes this entire arc worthwhile.
217.Come Along With Me Pt. 1- The series finale starts with a slow opener, yet it does its set up mostly well. Shermy and Beth are pretty well fleshed out characters in a matter of minutes, and we effectively arrive at the climax of both the conflicts between PB and Gumbald and between Finn and Fern. Unlike other episodes in Season 9, some of the jokes land quite well, and the finale gets progressively better until the bittersweet final episode.
216.President Porpoise is Missing- The stories don’t come together in the end, but damn if it isn’t some light hearted fun. Banana Man gets some love, BMO and Ice King interact in satisfying fashion, and Finn and Jake continue to delight. Also gotta love how they have so many people creeping around in their house.
215.Hoots- This is a pretty fascinating look into the world of dreams and works as pretty tense set up for what is to come. I wish Cosmic Owl was more interesting, but it’s an interesting episode overall.
214.The Jiggler- A fun episode where Finn explodes his pet. It deserves more love.
213.City of Thieves- Just another reminder of how fun and imaginative this series has been from the beginning.
212.In Your Footsteps- The odd tone has always worked for me with this episode. The ending is also quite surprising and works well.
211.Elements: Slime Central- “Elements” may not be as mind blowing and serious as many expected it to be, but it doesn’t forget to be fun. The skating contest where the winners get to be sensually assimilated by a giant amorphous blob is just weirdly hilarious, not to mention LSP is actually both herself and compelling here. Also, that joke about self-absorption.
210.Prisoners of Love- “Hoo, you’re a sociopath.”
209.Furniture and Meat- Man, that mustacheod strawberry getting double dipped in liquid gold is one of the more brutal deaths on this show. Nothing fantastic, but everything does come together well here.
208.Holly Jolly Secrets Pt. 1- Has that good old Season 3 charm to it. However, it does suffer a bit from being part one of a two-parter which only has 3-minutes worth of major emotional content. Just not quite enough going on.
207.Sky Witch- Not even some stilted writing can stop me from enjoying a mostly interesting and compelling adventure with PB and Marceline. Maja is not too much a presence here, and all the cool shit such as the house in the lake is too cool to ignore. And Crabbit gets to be a dancer in the end, which is strangely satisfying to me.
206.Conquest of Cuteness- Pretty good Season 3 opener with nothing spectacular but also perfectly fine the way it is. I’m a little surprised we didn’t see more of Cute King.
205.To Cut a Woman’s Hair- Come on, nothing can beat that glorious reveal of Finn’s golden flowing locks.
204.Friends Forever- I always liked this episode for exploring Ice King’s psyche without making him entirely sympathetic. It’s not very funny, but it’s good at what it does, which I have quite a bit of respect for.
203.Stakes: Vamps About- Man, I wish the vampires stayed together more during the miniseries. Hunting them down one by one was fun but simplified things a bit too much for my tastes.
202.Two Swords- This being one of the weakest episodes of Season 8 kind of gives you an indication of how consistently great that season is. I wasn’t sure about Fern at first, but he won me over pretty quickly.
201.Stakes: The Empress Eyes- I have to admit that Marcy and Ice King’s dynamic remains pretty compelling even with all the focus it has gotten. The song’s poop, but the Empress is a worthy foe, and most of the humor is pretty spot on.
200.Still- It’s pretty remarkable how well handled Finn and Jake’s relationship with Ice King has been. It all feels mostly organic.
199.Betty- I’m a sucker for time based episodes, which already gives this one some bonus points. Of course, it also helps that I’ve grown to really like Betty as a character following this admittedly worrying first appearance. Kind of a mess, but it ultimately works for me. Gotta love Death. Sadly just now realized that he played Death Metal.
198.All Your Fault- Not a lot to this episode, but it has creepiness in spades and gives us a brief yet insightful window into the confused madness that is Lemongrab.
197.Hug Wolf- I’ll hug your mom!
196.Donny- A favorite of mine as a kid. Doesn’t hold up entirely, but it’s perfectly enjoyable, and the Why Wolves are pretty great. The episode surprisingly (though unintentional) can be connected to finale in regards to the topic of empathy.
195.On the Lam- If anything, the episode does a great job showing how Martin leaves a trail of destruction regardless of where he goes or with who he interacts. Also helps that Martin, while being deceptively shallow, is a fantastic character.
194.Everything’s Jake- Good concept. Good execution. Utilizes actors from Futurama without going too far. We have what would be an above average episode of television for many series, folks, and we still have nearly 200 episodes to go. Really puts things into perspective.
193.Ghost Fly- For being a stupid concept, they really got a lot of mileage out of the ghost fly idea. It even is scary at times, and Finn and Jake are, of course, solid here. That ending is also creepy if you think about what just happened.
192.Blenanas- A good Finn and Ice King adventure with an insightful meta narrative in regards to the nature of endings. Really benefits from repeated viewings.
191.Beautopia- One of the weaker episodes from the Muto/Sugar duo, but weak is a relative term in comparison to the rest of their work. We’re starting to get to episodes that are close to being 7.5/10. Perfectly fun episode with an ending that somehow still works.
190.Angel Face- Jake the Horse- What, you had a gun on you this whole time? Angel Face- I am old enough to vote.
189.Islands: Mysterious Island- I feel like the structure of “Islands” really worked in its favor. Having a bunch of episodes about fun adventures with sad, political undertones really helps to support the miniseries’ phenomenal second half.
188.Bonnibel Bubblegum- This episode is difficult to rank. On one hand, Gumbald is proven to be a non-compelling character who exhibits minimal amounts of menace. On the other, PB continues to be a great character, and the ways the episode helps to further explain her motives and plays connect the dots with several separated events is fantastic. It doesn’t suffer as much as other Season 9 episodes, but ultimately Gumbald and a few weak moments brings this one down to simply being pretty good.
Part 3 is coming soon to a subreddit near you, date undecided mainly because doing 50+ episodes in one day brings me one step closer to insanity. Thank you for being on this journey with me.

About the Subreddit

How long have you been subscribed to Choices?
Choices was founded in August/September 2017 and merged with ChoicesSYP in October 2017, so it's a pretty new community. (For those unfamiliar with ChoicesSYP, it was u/Williukea and u/thunder75's project before we merged.) The vast majority of our subscribers unsurprisingly joined within the last half-year.

How did you first come across Choices?
Lots of people seem to have misinterpreted this question for how they came across the game instead of our community. But among those who answered the question, the vast majority (over half) found Choices via a web search, about a hundred found us through another fan community (TumblFacebook, etc) and a few found it through Reddit's search and discovery process. Twelve joined us from ChoicesSYP.
Favorite part about Choices?
People really like discussing things, of course! And we got a few responses from people who said they were new to this place and so they weren't sure yet. If you were one of those new ones, I hope you stayed and liked what your found!

Suggestions / Improvements / Comments

To the game
Unsurprisingly, diamond issues (costs, generation) were pretty high up there, probably about half of the comments were about them. Others were about stories and writing, especially making choices having a larger impact on story/gameplay, and for more stories with gender-selectable MCs.
Selected Responses
For the community
Again, people often confused this section with feedback for the game... But thanks to all who left ideas and comments for us! Some things we can do, some things we can't due to the limitations of Reddit. For example, I was motivated to add more comprehensive user flairs after seeing how much people wanted it, and u/Williukea added the weekly sticky to address the now-common issue of more than two books per release day. Spoilers are also a continuing concern of people.
Suggestions
Nice Comments (Thanks!)
Mod Note: Here's a chart showing the subscriber milestones we hit over the last year.
